I recently read your commentary and "Lunar Lessons" feature. It gave me pause to think about our country's goals and what the focus of mankind should truly be. I am certain if we had the same attitude and charisma of the previous space-faring generation, we would be living an Arthur C. Clarke existence.

My colleagues and I are undergoing the privilege (and headache) of competing in the 2012 Google Lunar X Prize. I firmly believe challenges like this will spark the economy and bring back the dream, vision and inspiration for the current generation. Your words have energized us. Great commentary in EE Times. I completely agree that a program driven with the same enthusiasm as Apollo can release our dependency on fossil fuels. I hope we can get the leadership necessary into the White House to drive this effort.

My dad was a Grumman engineer on the LM. He helped make us proud.

I enjoyed the cover story "Lunar Lessons." I worked for Grumman from 1961 to 1977, and was in charge of the simulation labs in Plant 5 (Ken Lee Hanger). Your story brought back memories of designing and building a spacecraft that was the first of its kind and accomplishing it all in 6 years 9 months (contract award to first landing). There hasn't been a project since that matches the LM project.

After leaving Grumman, I went to work as a contractor for NASA at Langley Research Center and have been here for 31-plus years. I'm doing some simulation work on the "Return to the Moon" project, so I guess I have come full circle.
