MUNICH, Germany NXP and car maker BMW have jointly developed a multifunctional car key which combines the usual car key functions with contactless payment and related solutions; the companies even offer the possibility to purchase public transportation tickets if transport companies warm to such solutions.
NXP has combined the car key remote control functions with near-field communications (NFC) abilities and a SmartMX security device typically used in chip-equipped credit cards. Thus, the key can be used for the respective applications.
This combination makes many applications and mobility-related scenarios possible, believes Willem Bulthuis, Vice President Marketing and Sales, Automotive for NXP. Earlier, the Dutch chip vendor has conducted experiments to add more functions to the car key for instance two-way radio communication abilities that enable car users to read out status informations related to the vehicle, for instance whether the doors are locked or the auxiliary heating system is on.
The current prototype goes one step further. "We have seen that mobile handsets are gaining acceptance as 'electronic purse', so why should this functionality and security technology not been embedded into a car key?" Bulthuis said.
Of course, the combination of a smartcard chip normally used in credit cards and a car key does not offer a solution, but only a platform for possible future solutions, the NXP manager acknowledged. "In order to make the system work, the car maker needs to have an agreement with a credit card company," Bulthuis said.
With the development, the NXP continues its strategy to combine telematics and communications functionalities with automotive electronics. Another development in this context is the Automotive Telematics On Board Unit Platform (ATOP) which aims at automatic road toll solutions.
The multifunctional car key prototype will be demonstrated at the Cartes & Identification trade show in Paris from November 4 to November 6.
