LONDON Telecom equipment conglomerate L.M. Ericsson (Stockholm, Sweden) is to close its Warrendale, Pennsylvania, research and development center in a move to cut costs.
Ericsson said the closure will be phased-in with some 250 workers affected by the middle of next year, and added it is evaluating the possibility of workers relocating to other company locations.
The company announced a major restructuring in manufacturing and R&D in February, that included the loss of jobs and manufacturing locations in the U.K. and Germany.
And Sony Ericsson, its joint venture for mobile terminals, said late September it would lay off about 400 workers, roughly half the work force, at its North American headquarters in Research Triangle Park, Rayleigh, North Carolina in the U.S.
That move was part of the major reorganization the company announced in July , when it said it would need to make savings of Euros 300 million and reduce headcount by some 2,000.
