LONDON — Pact XPP Technologies AG, a developer of a reconfigurable highly parallel processor architecture, has filed a law suit against FPGA vendor Xilinx Inc. and distributor Avnet Inc. in the Eastern District court of Texas, claiming patent infringement. The case was filed Dec 28, 2007.

Pact has been focusing accelerators that plug into the processor socket of dual or quad processor motherboards to run multimedia applications such as video, audio, voice, and image transcoding.

"While working on the accelerator solution we realized that certain advanced FPGA features may infringe on our patents," said Eberhard Schueler, director of technical marketing at Pact XPP. "The suit covers six of our patent families (families, not single patents) filed between 1993 and 2000. We believe that all DSP48 implementations and some IO circuitry are infringing."

The court date is scheduled for 2011, Schueler said.
