MUNICH, Germany — Globalfoundries has appointed Subramani Kengeri as its new president of design solutions. The move is significant: Kengeri has been the architect of the manufacturing alliance between Intel and TSMC.

Kengeri joins Globafoundries from competitor TSMC. According to industry sources, he was the man who pulled the strings in the outsourcing agreement between Intel and TSMC. Intel is the main competitor and the nemesis of Globalfoundries parent company Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). And after AMD had brought its production activities into a joint venture with Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) from Abu Dhabi to launch Globalfoundries, TSMC is the main competitor for the latter one.

Kengeri will be based in Globalfoundries' headquarters in Sunnyvale (Calif), but his activities will be closely dovetailed with activities based in Globalfoundries' manufacturing site in Dresden (Germany), namely with the local design enablement department overseen by David Greenlaw and with design services led by Gerd Teepe.

According to Globalfoundries, Kengeri led a team at TSMC chartered with developing design solutions for system-on-a-chip enablement and supporting technology co-optimization on advanced process nodes. He was said the primary executive technical owner on some critical design enablement programs at TSMC.
