A certfication program for USB 3.0 devices launched on Tuesday (Sept. 1) will allow manufacturers to test their products to ensure compliance with the new spec, also known as SuperSpeed USB.

Produccts that comply with the USB 3.0 spec will carry a SuperSpeed USB logo signifying that the product is compatible with existing USB 2.0 devices, Jeff Ravencraft, president of the USB Implementers Forum, said in a statement.

A SuperSpeed USB Platform Interoperability Laboratory was launched in March to initially host compliance and certification testing. The industry forum said testing will eventually be offered at its workshops and by independent test labs.

According to industry estimates, more than 3 billion USB devices were shipped in 2008.
