MUNICH, Germany — Austrian sensor technology vendor SensorDynamics AG (Lebring, Austria) has signed a license agreement with EnOcean GmBH (Unterhaching, Germany) on the latter ones' energy harvesting technology. SensorDynamics plans to use the technology for automotive products.

Under the terms of the license, SensorDynamics can use EnOcean's transceiver circuit SD341 which has been developed with automotive energy harvesting applications in mind. In particular it enables the design of batteryless active tire pressure monitors.

Active tire pressure systems are considered more exact than passive ones since they directly measure the pressure and transmit the data wirelessly to a receiver in the automotive body. Passive systems in contrast are measure the rotation speed of the wheels. If the rotation speed differs between the two wheels on the same axle, the system draws the conclusion that one tire has lost pressure and issues a warning message. A problem hitherto was that it was difficult and expensive to equip active systems with batteries.

Due to legislation in the US and Europe, tire pressure monitors are seen as a very large market opportunity.
