CYPRESS SEMICONDUCTOR CORP. (San Jose, Calif.) will offer its first free VHDL seminar on the Web, aimed at giving engineers preliminary information about VHDL design.

Though this one-hour multime dia presentation is targeted at engineers looking to understand the basics of using VHDL in programmable-logic devices, the site will also offer an open forum to discuss basic concepts, design flow and trends for this high-level language.

The seminar will take place April 7, from 9 to 10 a.m. Pacific time, with additional time allotted for questions and answers following the presentation. Engineers must register for the event at the Cypress Web site, clicking on the "Free VHDL primer" icon.

The seminar will be presented by industry Web-presentation startup E.N.E.N., which is a subsidiary of Marshall Industries.

MARCH 23-24: EE Times will sponsor the second annual Intellectual Property in Electronics Conference (IP98) in Santa Clara, Calif.-and the accompanying Web site has all the particulars.

"YOU MAY NOT want to hear it, but I think the Web is a big hype job.

"It's very useful for people in the media, and useful in education. And it's great for games and having fun. But beyond that, I don't see a big use for it. If you find somebody who spends four hours a day surfing the Web, they're really not a very balanced person. Networking is fundamentally important. All companies have to have networking, but I'm separating networking from the World Wide Web."

- Al Shugart, chief executive officer of Seagate Technology Inc.

EEVL (Edinburgh Engineering Virtual Library) is billing itself as a "top-level gateway to engineering information on the Net." It's a free Web-links list to quality networked enginee ring resources with an emphasis on the United Kingdom. EEVL provides bibliographic databases and an engineering-news-group archive.

ENGINEERING AYRSHIRE (Ayrshire, Scotland), an association of companies offering services in engineering and electronics subcontracting in and around Scotland, has a site.

KINETICSYSTEMS CORP. (Lockport, Ill.), a manufacturer of high-performance data acquisition and control systems, has info on products that include A/D, D/A, digital I/O, controllers, timers, counters and DSP. Applications include wind-tunnel data acquisition and control, jet-engine testing, automotive-component testing, missile testing, crash-sled testing, plasma physics, acoustics and vibration.

MOTOROLA SEMICONDUCTORS has added a highly technical site on programmable arrays, notably field-programmable analog ones. Info, data sheets and a forum are at their site.

OK, WE'RE BLOWING OUR OWN HORN, but you must make it your business to head over to EE Times ' revamped site. There's been a shift in editors for the site, and their mission is to give desig ners an ongoing supply of pertinent information, including breaking news.

The site is updated twice every day, with breaking news posted on the spot. On one recent day, there were 10 headlines from which to choose at any given moment. In addition, there's a new Reader Service System, making it easier to request information from advertisers or vendors mentioned in articles in any of the last several editions of EE Times , Product File or Product Shopper & Literature Review.

What's more, the Electronics Design and Technology Network (EDTN) , a sister of EE Times, is offering its hot content right on site now. So, designers can have easy access to the EE Design Center, the Reference Center and the myriad design resources, including app notes, hot integrated circuits and EDA tools on the Internet.
