LONDON Chip company Intel Corp. has agreed to buy Oplus Technologies Inc., a fabless provider of video processing products and technologies for digital television and digital displays, Intel said Thursday (Feb. 24).
The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Oplus Technologies Inc. (Yokne'am, Israel) successfully launched two chips on the market, called Rembrandt and Matisse, which were designed into plasma displays, LCD-TVs and digital projectors, prior to raising $10 million in an investment round in Aug. 2003. The funding was earmarked for increased R&D, expanded sales and marketing activities, and to fund offices in Asia and the US.
The acquisition of Oplus would provide Intel (Santa Clara, Calif.) with technology, expertise and products that complement the company's offerings in the consumer electronics market, and fits in with Intel's digital home strategy the company said.
"The transition to digital displays coupled with a reduction in display costs is enabling larger, higher resolution televisions, but that in turn demands higher quality video processing capabilities," said Glenda Dorchak, vice president of the Digital Home Group and general manager of the Consumer Electronics Group at Intel, in a statement. "Oplus' display expertise and competitive products will enable us to deliver compelling solutions for OEMs in this rapidly growing market segment. Oplus products have created a new standard for image quality, color reproduction, noise reduction and sharpness."
Oplus currently sells three lines of video processors targeted at the full spectrum of digital televisions and digital displays. The company, which has approximately 100 employees, will continue selling products under the Oplus brand name and will report into the Intel Consumer Electronics Group, Intel said.
