AMD claims world's fastest desktop processor

 
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--Claiming the performance lead over Intel Corp., Advanced Micro Devices Inc. today introduced what it calls the world's fastest microprocessor for desktop PCs.

Featuring increased cache memory for greater performance, the AMD Athlon XP processor 3000+ outperforms competing desktop PC processors by up to 17% on a variety of industry standard software benchmarks, according to the Sunnyvale-based company.

Systems based on the AMD Athlon XP processor 3000+ are immediately available from NEC-CI in Europe and soon from other computer manufacturers around the globe. The chips sell for $588 in 1,000-unit lots.
