TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's Via Technologies Inc. and its graphics subsidiary, S3 Graphics, today announced it has licensed the high-speed memory technology from Kentron Technologies Inc.
Under the terms, Via will incorporate Kentron's Quad Band Memory (QBM) controller interface technology into its PC chip set lines. QBM is an emerging technology that promises to double the speeds of double-data-rate (DDR) SDRAM memory for PCs. Wilmington, Del.-based Kentron says its QBM technology makes use of an FET-based switching technology that boosts the speeds of DDR SDRAMs.
This license marks the first time that PC based systems will be able to interface to DDR-533 and DDR-667 modules featuring QBM technology, said Chewei Lin, vice president of product marketing for Taipei-based Via.
"Kentron's leading-edge QBM memory technology will enable us to strengthen our position as the market leader in providing high-performance chipsets and, at the same time, exploit all the potential of the existing DDR SDRAM infrastructure," Lin said.
Last year, Kentron, ST Microelectronics Inc., and others teamed up to announce modules based on its QBM. Kentron provided the QBM, while STMicro provided the supporting chips.
