SAN JOSE --As expected today, Intel Corp. launched its 2-GHz Pentium 4 microprocessor to kick off its summer developers forum here.
The 2-GHz central processing unit is being fabricated with 0.18-micron CMOS technology, and it's available for $562 each in quantities of 1,000, said Intel. The company also introduced a 1.9-GHz version of the 32-bit CPU at $375 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
According to Intel, systems based on 2-GHz Pentium 4 can create and share digital media up to 81% faster than a computer based on 1-GHz Pentium III processors. During the Intel Developers Forum in San Jose, more than 40 software vendors and computer manufacturers will demonstrated a range of new applications and products optimized for the Pentium 4 processors, said the Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip company.
In addition to selling CPU chips, Intel said it is shipping 2-GHz Pentium processors "boxed up" for distribution and system builders worldwide.
Intel predicted that the 2-GHz Pentium 4 will enable business computer users to increase productivity more than 50% compared to the 1-GHz Pentium III. The higher CPU speed will boost performance for multitasking environments where background tasks like virus checking, encryption and file compression increase the processor workload, said Intel.
