SUNNYVALE, Calif.--Advanced Micro Devices Inc. today rolled out its 1.1-GHz mobile Athlon 4 microprocessor and a 900-MHz Duron processor as part of the official two-year celebration of the 1999 launch of its Athlon series.

AMD claimed its unit market share in the x86-compatible central processor market has grown from 12.6% in the third quarter of 1999 to more than 22% in Q2 of 2001, based on market data from Mercury Research in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Citing recent numbers from Dataquest Inc. in San Jose, AMD claimed 37% market share in desktop PC markets in North American small business systems as well as 32% in PCs used by government agencies and 21% in education markets during the first quarter of this year.

AMD has set its sights on grabbing more market share in mobile computer markets. To do that, the Sunnyvale chip maker plans to move its entire processor series to silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology within the next couple of years (see July 13 story). Even without SOI, AMD is aiming for 50% share in U.S. mobile PC processor shipments through retail channels by the end of 2001.

"Our mobile processors' unparalleled power management system allows customers up to 30% more computer time with AMD PowerNow! technology before battery recharging," claimed Pat Moorhead, vice president of desktop and mobile marketing for AMD's Computation Products Group.

AMD is also offering a 1-GHz Duron processor for desktop PCs is based on the new CPU core, codenamed "Morgan." The enhancements to the new AMD Duron processor will support the upcoming Windows XP operating system from Microsoft Corp., said AMD. This feature will enable PC users to "immediately enjoy the benefits of additional multimedia instructions for better performance on photo, music and Internet applications." The new 1-GHz Duron will support AMD's Socket A platform.

In quantities of 1,000 units, the new 1.1-GHz AMD mobile Athlon 4 processor is priced at $425. The 900-MHz mobile AMD Duron processor has a selling price of $130, and the new 1-GHz desktop Duron is priced at $89, in 1,000-unit quantities.
