Silicon Strategies

Happy new year! As is our custom, actually we started it last year here are my fearless picks for the semiconductor industry's Top 10 news stories of the year. There definitely was no shortage of news in 2001--the year was a reporter's delight. Less so for most companies and market researchers, however.

Dissecting the news of the past year again was a bit of a shock. For example, I couldn't find anyone at the start of 2001 who had a clue as to what kind of a year it was going to be. Nearly everyone was bullish. My Top 10 list is not rocket science--I'm sure some readers will disagree with my choices. Indeed, I'd like to hear from anyone who has his or her own candidates and why they should be top ranked. E-mail me at bhenkel@aol.com.

One of several stories that nearly made my list was a bizarre one. The curtain rang down on the Avanti source-code-theft case and the EDA company had to pay $195 million in restitution to Cadence Design Systems. Several of its senior executives and co-founders were on their way to jail. At yearend, Avanti was about to be acquired and its chairman was nowhere to be found.
