BEIJING ( ChipWire) -- Motorola Inc.'s Semiconductor Products Sector will open a chip design center in Suzhou, China, to focused on microprocessors and IC technology for consumer electronics and telecommunications.
An executive at the group said the company expects the Chinese microprocessor market to grow to $410 million this year, and to reach an estimated $730 million by 2004. Meanwhile, cell phone usage is expected to rise from the current 7.4% of the Chinese population to 17.3% in 2004.
The Suzhou design center will take advantage of a Motorola's large company design library, and will be linked with other Motorola IC design centers around the world.
The center is also expected to introduce Motorola's design technologies to engineering graduates from many of the universities around Suzhou, a picturesque city in Jiangsu Province in eastern China. The area has recently attracted several overseas high-tech investors, including Advanced Micro Devices, Samsung Electronics and Seagate Technology.
Jiang Province has also become a magnet for domestic electronics companies, and has become an emerging center for the Chinese electronics industry.
