SAN FRANCISCO — Flash memory vendor Spansion Inc. said Thursday (Jan. 18) it has begun sampling 65-nanometer MirrorBit Ornand devices optimized for data storage in high-end, multimedia wireless handsets.
The devices, manufactured at the company's flagship Fab 25 facility in Austin, Texas, will be in production early in the third quarter, Spansion (Sunnyvale, Calif.) said.
The 65-nm MirrorBit Ornand family, with densities of 512 Mb, 1 GB and 2 GB, is designed to enable rich multi-media handset capabilities, including digital television streaming, multi-shot photography with up to 5-megapixel pictures and CD-quality audio, Spansion said. The company said its multi-chip package solution combines MirrorBit NOR and MirrorBit Ornand and enables faster boot time, with improved power savings when in standby mode compared to pure code shadowing solutions.
"Transitioning to 65-nm MirrorBit technology will strengthen our high-end offering through greater value solutions with higher densities at lower costs, and will provide wireless customers with more advanced capabilities, giving them the ability to create even more innovative, high-end multi-media handsets," said Bertrand Cambou, Spansion president and CEO, in a statement.
Spansion said MirrorBit Ornand complements its MirrorBit NOR flash memory and offers interface, pin-out and software compatibility with the company's 90-nm MirrorBit Ornand devices.
Spansion said it is planning 45-nm MirrorBit production on 300-mm wafers at its new SP1 facility in mid 2008 and intends to manufacture 65-nm at Fab 25 and SP1 as early as possible.
