SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The Semiconductor Test Consortium Inc. (STC) has folded.
As part of the plan, the automatic test equipment (ATE) consortium will transfer much of its work to the SEMI trade group. The STC will also transfer the ''OpenStar'' trademark and logo to Japan's Advantest Corp. Advantest is selling an ATE system, based on the ''OpenStar'' architecture.
The STC was formed in 2003 to devise standards for the ATE industry. Advantest, Infineon, Intel, Motorola and others were the charter members.
But the STC never really took off. Upon review, the STC has decided to transfer its work to the global industry association, Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI).
Last year, Advantest, Amkor, Infineon, Intel, LTX-Credence, Qualcomm, Roos Instruments, Teradyne, and Verigy formed a new organization to foster pre-competitive collaboration and standards in ATE. The group is called Collaborative Alliance for Semiconductor Test or CAST. The idea is to lower overall test costs.
Then, earlier this year, CAST discontinued its operations as a separate, non-profit entity and transfered its governance to the SEMI trade group. So in effect, SEMI has assumed control of both the STC and CAST.
