Vision template inspires real-time pattern classification
News & Analysis

The human brain nearly instantaneously classifies objects, even when parts of them are hidden by obstructions. Computer-based pattern recognition, on the other hand, rarely operates in real-time. But Sandia National Laboratories researchers believe they have found a way to level the playing field.
Technique depicts magnetic vortex migration at critical current

Bell Labs has demystified how superconductors abandon their resistanceless conduction when they reach their "critical current." Tiny, previously stationary magnetic vortices, containing a single quantum of magnetic flux, begin an organized coherent migration at critical current, which Bell Labs researchers have been able to view for the first time. The new imaging technique is beginning to catch on with other superconductor researchers, and may lead to a better understanding of the high-temperat
Smart 3-D maps go public

Smart visualization software, designed by the military to represent thousands of online documents in 3-D maps, has surfaced in a commercial version called Themescape. Licensed to Cartia Inc. by the military lab Pacific Northwest National (Richland, Wash.), Themescape clusters documents with similar content onto topographical "information maps," upon which users click with a mouse to zoom in on topic areas and individual source documents.

NEXT UPCOMING BROADCAST
In conjunction with unveiling of EE Times’ Silicon 60 list, journalist & Silicon 60 researcher Peter Clarke hosts a conversation on startups in the electronics industry. One of Silicon Valley's great contributions to the world has been the demonstration of how the application of entrepreneurship and venture capital to electronics and semiconductor hardware can create wealth with developments in semiconductors, displays, design automation, MEMS and across the breadth of hardware developments. But in recent years concerns have been raised that traditional venture capital has turned its back on hardware-related startups in favor of software and Internet applications and services. Panelists from incubators join Peter Clarke in debate.
