Researchers create artificial eye chip for robots
News & Analysis

Harnessing neural-network technology gleaned from the biology of the human eye, a Johns Hopkins University researcher has demonstrated a "smart eye" chip that combines image sensing with filtering and object-tracking capabilities. The brainchild of Ralph Etienne-Cummings, the circuit is based on a hybrid analog-digital CMOS technology and is touted as being much faster than distributed-component systems that use separate chips — such as an image sensor, microcontroller and non-volatile RAM
Neural nets create natural speech interaction

SpeechWorks International is applying neural-network technology in a practical-speech-recognition system that achieves a new level of natural-speech interaction by letting telephone callers ask for information in ordinary, unstructured English. Federal Express Inc. is delploying the approach in a shipping-rate information system in cooperation with NextLink Interactive.
Molecular switching is probed for nanocomputers
News & Analysis

As chemists learn more about molecular behavior, the possibility of building nanocomputers-both CPUs and memory systems-is getting closer to reality. Both the complex proteins manufactured by virtually all living systems and long chain polymer molecules can act as bistable devices when their basic 3-D configurations change as a result of outside stimulation. Probing with tiny atomic-force microscope tips or simply using photons, researchers are getting a handle on molecular mechanisms that could
Neural net mines database for rules
News & Analysis

Engineers at SciFi Ltd. (Woburn Sand, England) have come up with a way to automate the process of extracting meaningful information from massive technical databases, automating a process that can be labor-intensive and time-consuming. RuleMiner finds fuzzy rules implicit within existing databases and codifies them for use by another program that interfaces with real-time control systems.

NEXT UPCOMING BROADCAST
In conjunction with unveiling of EE Times’ Silicon 60 list, journalist & Silicon 60 researcher Peter Clarke hosts a conversation on startups in the electronics industry. One of Silicon Valley's great contributions to the world has been the demonstration of how the application of entrepreneurship and venture capital to electronics and semiconductor hardware can create wealth with developments in semiconductors, displays, design automation, MEMS and across the breadth of hardware developments. But in recent years concerns have been raised that traditional venture capital has turned its back on hardware-related startups in favor of software and Internet applications and services. Panelists from incubators join Peter Clarke in debate.
