Over-the-phone electronic-commerce applications should be easier to develop with a new release of the flagship software suite from SpeechWorks International Inc. The company's SpeechWorks 5.0 folds five new turnkey e-commerce modules into a more accurate and leaner speech-recognition engine. True to its neural-network-based core, SpeechWorks 5.0 can also now adapt online to new pronunciations, automatically "guess" at obscure dialects and learn to verify the identify of its users.

After abandoning the Apple Computer Inc. platform when it appeared to be leaking, Dragon Systems Inc. announced Tuesday (May 11) that it has reboarded the platform that now appears to be solidly afloat. With Apple's iMac now the world's best selling PC, Dragon promised that its speech-recognition product will be running on the PowerPC in four languages by 2000.

A government contractor to the U.S. Navy is reworking its fuzzy-logic development system for use with Microsoft Corp.'s Excel spreadsheet. Sonalysts Inc. said tying its Fuzzy Query system to the widely used spreadsheet will gear its product for a mass audience.
