A new breed of ultrawideband radio was unveiled at this week's International Conference on Ultra-Wideband.
New quantum encryption record claimed
News & Analysis
9/26/2006   Post a comment
Government laboratories are claiming a new distance record for an emerging encryption scheme called quantum key distribution.
Mobile ions may tailor organic ICs
News & Analysis
9/25/2006   Post a comment
Cornell University professor George Malliaras, a materials science engineer, is looking to capitalize on the ability of organic semiconductors to host mobile ions.
InP laser bonded to CMOS chip
News & Analysis
9/25/2006   Post a comment
With optical processing migrating from exotic gallium arsenide devices to inexpensive silicon, Intel Corp. showed a research chip earlier this year that could do the world's first Raman lasing in a silicon waveguide.
Service reconstructs blurry video as sharp stills
Product News
9/18/2006   Post a comment
Ever wonder how blurry surveillance video images can be admissible as evidence in court? Software tools like Sarnoff Corp.'s VideoDetective mine the hidden data in such images to reconstruct their details clearly in still shots. But such tools are affordable only by large corporations and government agencies.

Team demonstrates molecular-scale memory
News & Analysis
9/11/2006   Post a comment
As chip dimensions shrink, picometer variability among nanoscale dimensions and the uneven distribution of dopants stand in the way of further miniaturization. Use of a precisely designed organic molecule as the memory storage element could provide one solution, because the molecules could be mass-produced to be identical.

Post-9/11, technology keeps us a step ahead
News & Analysis
9/11/2006   Post a comment
Five years after 9/11, billions of dollars have been invested in explosive detection equipment using magnetic resonance, computed tomography, Raman spectroscopy, trace detection and other techniques.
For security apps, no experimental sensor is too novel
News & Analysis
9/11/2006   Post a comment
A slew of sensor technologies thought up in the wake of 9/11 are still in the labs, and their creators are scouted like promising minor leaguers. In recent years, GE Security alone has called up three players: InVision, VisioWave and Edwards Systems Technology.
Algorithm gives cameras a fly's-eye view
News & Analysis
9/4/2006   Post a comment
By mimicking the way a fly's brain interprets images coming in through its eyes, an algorithm created by a researcher at Australia's University of Adelaide lets digital cameras "see" more clearly.
Thimble-like digitizer doubles as input device
Product News
9/4/2006   Post a comment
Digitizing three-dimensional objects today is a tedious process requiring the user to trace an object's outlines using a tethered stylus. And even after laboriously running the stylus over every nook and cranny, the user captures only the object's shape; its other properties cannot be determined.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems. Signal integrity sage Ransom Stephens will explain how PAM4 differs from NRZ and what to expect in design, measurement, and signal analysis.
