Gallium arsenide diodes are being used to build real-time nuclear-radiation detectors that their inventors promise will be as small and cheap as today's non-real-time "dosimeter" badges. The button-size single-chip detectors will give on-the-spot readings of radiation levels, as Geiger counters do, but without the Geiger counters' expense and heft.

Superconducting junctions eyed for quantum computing

Josephson junctions, a superconducting type of transistor, are being investigated as a possible route to scalable quantum computers by a physicist at the University of Michigan. Franco Nori, who has been investigating the concept with scientists at the NEC Fundamental Research Lab (Tsukuba, Japan) and Riken (Wako-shi, Japan), believes Josephson junctions will be the key element in integrated circuits that can process quantum bits, or qubits.
Microscopic battery runs sensors for decades

Using radioactive isotopes as fuel, a tiny battery developed at Cornell University here could turn out to be an ideal power source for remote sensors or other small-scale systems. Cornell professor Amit Lal used microelectromechanical-systems (MEMS) technology to create a millimeter-size battery that can run for decades. The research team plans to scale the prototype to even smaller dimensions so that it could become a power source for MEMS.
