State University of New York (SUNY) researchers who were studying the problem of bacteria that sabotage the yield on semiconductor lines may have found a way to use them to create "biotransistors," harnessing a particular bacterium's photosensitivity to create an optoelectronic switching element.

A sensory test pattern that jump-starts the link from the brain to the ear has been discovered to exist prior to the development of actual hearing capability. The discovery by Johns Hopkins University researchers may eventually give electronic engineers an important new tool for building artificial cochleas and retinas.
