Reports have surfaced that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. "boycotted" the Taiwan + China Semiconductor Industry Outlook 2004 conference here last week, ostensibly because Richard Chang, president and CEO of archrival Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp., was the keynote speaker.

Let freedom reign: The hook on last week's economic-freedom rankings from the San Francisco-based Pacific Research Institute was political: The "red" states-those that voted for Bush last month-have economic freedom; the Kerry-leaning "blue" states don't.

Often, the answers to life's great mysteries lie right under our noses, and we don't even realize it.
