WASHINGTON The government is seeking proposals on how to establish a national coupon program for distributing digital converter boxes needed for the DTV transition.
The Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) said Monday (July 24) it is seeking public comments on rules for the DTV transition plan.
Congress mandated the subsidy program when it imposed a Feb. 18, 2009, deadline for completing the U.S. digital TV transition. Legislation approved earlier this year authorized NTIA to establish a $990 million converter box program that would allow U.S. households to obtain a maximum of two coupons worth $40 each for the purchase of digital converter boxes.
Market researchers have predicted chaos unless details of the DTV transition plan are resolved quickly and communicated effectively to consumers who rely solely on broadcast TV.
NTIA said it would also publish its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Tuesday in the Federal Register.
