Study: LCD monitor panel prices up

MANHASSET, N.Y. — Following an 5.8 percent increase on 17in. liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor panel prices the first half of August, surging demand is pushing mainstream panel prices higher the remainder of the month, according to data from market research service WitsView.
The firm expects average selling prices (ASPs) of 15- and 17in. monitor panel to rise 2 to 3 percent, while 19- and 19in. wide monitor panel ASPs will rise 1 to 2 percent the same period. In addition, 20in. monitor panels are seeing demand increase and likely to remain flat for the first time.
According to WitsView, monitor demand is likely to improve in September, thus driving panel prices even higher.
The firm also noted that ASPs of notebook panels, now flat, could begin rising shortly as vendors ask for a 2 to 3 percent increase on 14.1- and 15.4in. wide panels.
While prices for notebook and monitor panels rise, ASPs for most LCD TV panels are likely to remain flat as inventories stay relatively tight. However, inventories of 42in. LCD TV panels remain higher, thus resulting in a slight ASP drop for those sizes, according to WitsView.
Industry analysts are seeing an improving market for LCD panels and components as demand rebounds, after a slump the first half of the year.
