LONDON Analog mixed signal chip specialist Microsemi Corporation (Irvine, Calif.) is buying, for about $25 million in cash, Semicoa, which focuses on the design and manufacture of silicon transistor components for a variety of applications in the High-Reliability and space sectors.
"Not only is the acquisition accretive, but it also offers considerable long term synergies as we consolidate Semicoas current operations", commented James Peterson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Microsemi Corporation.
Peterson added Semicoa has been expanding rapidly over the past few years with additional capacity to meet strong end market demand, "and we fully expect to benefit from this investment as we consolidate its front-end and back-end equipment and operations into our Lawrence and Ireland facilities."
Microsemi has a development and manufacturing facility in Ennis, County Clare in Ireland that dates back to 1992, when it acquired the Unitrode facility set up there in 1979.
Over the past few years, Microsemi has expanded into several market through acquisitions such as the November 2007 purchase of Microwave Device Technology Corp. (MDT) of Westford, Mass. for $7.8 million ; the smaller, about $2 million, acquisition of TSI Microelectronics Corp. (TSI) earlier this year, and the Israeli group PowerDsine Ltd. for $245 million in late 2006 that made it a key player for power-over-Ethernet (PoE) solutions.
