BANGALORE, India — Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (Camarillo, Calif.), a vendor of high-speed interface chips, is to set up an Indian subsidiary firm, Vitesse Semiconductor (India) Pvt. Ltd., to conduct chip R & D at its center in Hyderabad.

The original Hyderabad center came to Vitesse when it acquired some of the resources of U.S. digital storage company Adaptec Inc. (Milpitas, Calif.) and will have about 25 engineers, according to Yatin D. Mody, Vitesse chief financial officer, on Tuesday (July 5).

Vitesse and Adaptec announced an alliance to make and market Serial-Attached SCSI products earlier this year, and as part of this agreement, Vitesse has hired some Adaptec engineers who will work out of Hyderabad. Adaptec's work in India will be consolidated at its Bangalore center.

Vitesse plans to move more and more chip development activities to India, Mody said. Engineers with similar experience who would cost the company about $125,000 annually in the U.S. were available for a fifth of that cost in India, and one of the reasons to move more work to India is this cost differential. The other is the ability to conduct work on a 24 hour by 7 day basis, he added.
