SAN FRANCISCO — Japanese chip maker Renesas Technology Corp. plans to expand capability at its Vietnam design subsidiary, adding a new building and increasing the number of engineers at the site to 500 from 100, the company said Thursday (June 29).

With the approval for an increase in capital by the Ho Chi Minh City Export Processing Zone Authority, Renesas (Tokyo) plans add a new building in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The new building is expected to be operational in September 2007.

Renesas' Vietnam design subsidiary, Renesas Design Viet Nam Co., was created in October 2004. The subsidiary currently has approximately 100 engineers developing and designing system-on-chip hardware and software for mobile, automotive, and digital consumer applications.

The subsidiary has already completed projects including verification work on SuperH CPU cores, design of intellectual property modules such as video I/O and USB modules, SH-Mobile product development, and the development of digital TV software.

The number of engineers at the subsidiary is expected to increase to 500 by 2008.
