SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Startup Indilinx Inc. has entered into the solid-state drive (SSD) controller business by rolling out a new part.

Separately, Indilinx and Mosaid have disclosed a strategic cooperation in the development of high-performance SSD controllers for the next generation DDR type flash memory.

Indilinx' new device, dubbed Barefoot, is based on 90-nm technology and provides read speeds of 230-MB/s. It supports capacities up to 512-GB with multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash.

''Despite the prevalence of SATA 2 interface, previous SSDs didn't fully utilize its speed specs,'' according to the startup. ''But Barefoot is virtually the first controller which fully utilizes SATA 2 interface, lagging (hard-disk drives) about 3 years behind technically.''

Indilinx and Mosaid are preparing for a third-generation of controller for SATA 3 interface, which will provide 600MB/s. ''BareFoot is a second-generation controller for flash SSDs that meets the demanding performance requirements of PC and server applications,'' said Jin-Ki Kim, vice President of R&D for Mosaid, in a statement.
