BANGALORE, India Tata Consultancy Services, a division of one of India's leading industrial conglomerates, has emerged as the biggest software and service exporter in India, according to an industry survey.
The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) reported that Tata accounted for $1.19 billion of the $8.9 billion that software and services exports provided by Indian companies in 2003. Tata is in the process of launching its initial public offering.
Tata was followed in export revenue rankings by Infosys Technologies Ltd. ($1.02 billion) and Wipro's software division ($854 million).
"The Indian IT software and services companies are truly turning global," said Nasscom Chairman Jerry Rao. A growth rate of around 30.5% during 2003-04 by the software and services industry "has placed this sector amongst the highest performers within the Indian market. The top 20 software and services exporters continue to account for nearly 65 per cent of the total IT software and services exports," Rao added.
The top 20 software and service exports continue to drive the overall growth of the Indian IT industry, but small and medium-sized enterprises have also performed well over the last year, the group said.
Satyam Computer Services ranked fourth with $538 million, followed by HCL Technologies with $412 million and Patni Computer with $266 million. The Nasscom survey did not include companies listed outside India, such as Cognizant Technologies, which are based in the U.S. but have significant offshore operations in India.
Nasscom said Indian IT companies have seen significant revenue growth as they increasingly move beyond traditional services.
