SANTA CLARA, Calif. Intel Corp. will roll out a new collection of CPUs for mobile computing on Monday, (Jan. 25) that will include both Pentium and, for the first time, Celeron processors optimized for use in notebook computers. In an emerging trend, operating frequencies for the new mobile chips will be very close to or even identical to the speeds of the comparable desktop CPUs, despite the mobile chips' emphasis on low power.
The mobile processors will be built using the company's workhorse 0.25-micron process, will operate at the low end of the planned voltage range and will run at up to 300 MHz, according to company sources.
Intel is expected to announce the first mobile CPUs from its 0.18-micron process later this year. In that process, scheduled to come into production around the end of the second quarter, CPU performance for the low-voltage mobile and standard-voltage desktop parts will be nearly identical, according to the company.
