LVDS drivers convert a system's TTL signal into a plus/minus 350-millivolt differential signal. LVDS receivers convert the differential signal back to TTL levels. A differential bus using LVDS signaling allows system designers to implement point-to-point connections with hot board swapping capabilities.

"The Internet explosion has fueled the need to transmit large amounts of data within and between systems without compromising data integrity or system reliability," said product marketing manager Aaron Reynoso. "To achieve this, the datacom and telecom industries are moving to newer differential bus architectures, with LVDS technology leading the way."

Reynoso said that LVDS is already replacing today's older differential technologies such as ECL/PECL, and RS-485 and RS-422.

"The low-voltage swing of an LVDS differential bus enables a designer to transfer high-speed data with lower power and less electromagnetic interference than is possible with older technologies," he said.

The PI90LVxxx family includes the 017A, 027A and 031A drivers; 018A, 028A and 32A receivers; and 050, 051, 179 and 180 transceivers. The devices are for telecommunications applications including central office equipment, PBXes, switches, repeaters and basestations. They can also be used in data communications hubs or routers, digital cameras, printers and copiers.

The PI90LVxxx family is available in three package options: small-outline IC, thin shrink small-outline package and MSOP. Prices for 1,000-piece quantities range from 80 cents for single-line drivers such as the 017A to $3 for quad-line drivers like the 031A.
