PALO ALTO, Calif. — A startup named LinuxDevices has formed a Web site that's intended to give developers of embedded systems a one-stop shop for information, news, articles and products on the increasingly popular Linux operating system. The site also provides a forum for discussions on Linux and its incorporation into embedded computing applications.
The startup was founded by Rick Lehrbaum, known in embedded computing circles as a founder of Ampro Computers Inc., an embedded computing specialist that originated both the EBX motherboard form factor and the PC/104 and PC/104+ buses. Developers who've attended a PC/104 tutorial at a conference have likely seen Lehrbaum as the presenter.
"We aim to be the global 'embedded Linux portal' — the first place you go on the Internet when you're looking for news, information, products, and links to embedded Linux resources," Lehrbaum said. "LinuxDevices.com also will be an active player in helping bring coherence to the sometimes fragmented Linux world."
The site "will feature a broad spectrum of embedded-oriented Linux topics — including news, articles, events, links, jobs, polls, and an interactive forum— all exclusively focused on using Linux in embedded applications," he said. "LinuxDevices.com will host up-to-date information about embedded Linux related single-board computers, chips, tools, and support, and will highlight commercial embedded Linux distributions — for example MontaVista's Hard Hat Linux, Lineo's Embedix, and Cygnus' EL/IX — as well as numerous real-time and small-footprint open source projects such as RTLinux, Small Linux, Linux, Loaf [Linux on a floppy], Elks [embeddable Linux kernel subset], etc."
