Single-board computer packs StrongARM punch

eeProductCenter

COLUMBIA, MD. — Applied Data Systems (ADS) has introduced a 4 x 6-inch single-board computer based on Intel's StrongARM SA-1110 microprocessor that runs Microsoft's Windows CE, version 2.12.

Positioned as a graphics client for embedded industrial applications, the board can drive a pair of displays with formats as large as 1024 x 768-pixel XGA.

The SBC features a 16-kbyte instruction and 8-kbyte data cache, memory-management units, read and write buffers and a 512-byte minidata cache. It includes a memory and PCMCIA control module, system control module and peripheral control module.

The board also contains a 100-MHz memory bus and a flexible memory controller that supports SDRAM, SMROM and variable-latency I/O devices. It supports four banks of either fast-page-mode SDRAM or EDO DRAM, "providing manufacturers with more memory design alternatives to meet target cost and performance requirements," said Robert Olsen, chief executive officer of ADS.

The board supports "a comprehensive array of on-board communication devices," Olsen said, "highlighted by CAN for CE, Ethernet (brought out both through the on-board chip and via PCMCIA, providing simultaneous LAN and WAN capabilities), three serial ports, PCMCIA, IrDA, and an extensive user-configurable selection of "Smart IO." Pricing for the board is in the low $300s, and it is available immediately.
