SDRAM DIMM shrinks to 1.2-inch height

eeProductCenter

Wilmington, Mass. - Kentron Technologies claims to take some of the heat out of the 1U Internet server format with a new high-density, ultralow-profile double-date-rate (DDR) SDRAM dual-in-line memory module. The 1.2-inch registered DIMM, a departure from the current standard height of 1.75 inches, uses the company's Foldable Electronic Memory Module Assembly (Femma) technology.

Femma provides a memory platform using dual pc boards connected by a flexible circuit component, which the company says avoids the thermal issues associated with the traditional method of stacking memory devices. Since the module is smaller, there is more room for heat to dissipate.

The company has proposed the smaller size as a new industry standard to Jedec, the engineering standardization body of the Electronic Industry Alliance. The standard is needed, the company said, because as the Internet grows, the need for higher memory and more servers grows along with it.

Currently, there is no solution for high-density (1-Gbyte) low-profile memory in a straight-DIMM socket in a 1U server. Companies wanting to use 1 Gbyte of memory on standard-sized 1.75-inch boards must lay them in sideways, blocking air flow and causing heat buildup. Kentron said it is one of the first manufacturers to market a 1-Gbyte, 1.2-inch registered module that will fit in the space allotted in a 1U server and still allow air flow.

The company is offering a family of 1-Gbyte, error-checking and -correction (ECC) registered memory modules that meet the Jedec Solid State Association low-profile standard height of 1.2 inches for DIMMs for the 1U server environment. It is said to follow all PC-133 and DDR Registered DIMM specifications. The DIMM is shipping this month.

The modules are available in PC-133, DDR200 and DDR-266 Registered ECC formats, with densities ranging from 256 Mbytes to 1 Gbyte. Prices range from $399 for the 512-Mbyte model to $1,299 for 1 Gbyte.
