Santa Clara, Calif. - Elpida Memory (USA) Inc. is offering 1-Gbyte unbuffered double-data-rate SDRAM dual in-line memory modules for high-performance PC and workstation applications. PCs and workstations typically use unbuffered DIMMs-without an extra phase-locked loop or register chips-because they are cost-effective, the company said.

Elpida's EBD11UD8ABFA and EBD11ED8ABFA memory modules use 16 or 18 high-density, 512-Mbit DDR synchronous DRAM devices to achieve what the company says is the highest memory density currently possible for unbuffered DIMMs. The modules are priced at $2,000 and $2,200 respectively in sample quantities.

The EBD11UD8ABFA is a 184-pin, PC2100 unbuffered device configured as two banks of 128M words x 64 bits. The EBD11ED8ABFA offers 128M words x 72 bits in two banks and also features error-correction code.

The 512-Mbit DDR SDRAMs mounted on the DIMMs are produced with Elpida's 0.13-micron process technology and packaged in a TSOP. They support 2.5-volt operation and transfer data at 266 Mbits/second with a programmable column-address strobe (CAS) latency of 2 or 2.5. The DIMMs comply with the Jedec PC2100 standard, supporting total data transfer rates of 2.1 Gbytes/s using the DDR266A component. Elpida plans to support PC2700, with a data transfer rate of 2.7 Gbytes/s, using the DDR333B standard component.
