ALAMEDA, Calif. Perforce Software Inc. this week rolled out the latest version of its Perforce SCM (software configuration management) system, calling it a data management alternative for electronic designers. While most Perforce SCM users are applications developers, version 2002.2 offers caching technology designed to appeal to hardware and software design teams, the company said.
Perforce 2002.2 supports design over multiple locations, and provides version control and workspace management. Perforce Software said SCM is used by many electronics companies, including Nvidia, Pixim, Silicon Graphics, ReShape and Matrix Semiconductor.
A new feature of Perforce 2002.2 is the Perforce Proxy (P4P), which uses caching technology to help hardware and software developers overcome restricted or expensive bandwidth. The caching allows fast download times for remote users, the company said. P4P caches file revisions sent from a central server, while subsequent requests for that same revision are delivered from a proxy server. The software also provides a real-time view of project changes across the entire team.
Perforce said P4P eliminates the need for repository replication because operations occur in real-time. Perforce 2002.2 is available now with end-user licenses starting at $750 per seat.
