New Albany, Ind. - One of the biggest challenges system designers face is gauging the impact of high-speed connectors, and all the components on the pc board in the transmission line, on overall system performance. To meet this challenge, Samtec Inc. recently launched its Final Inch offering of support resources including modeling tools and test and evaluation boards to help designers simulate and test Samtec's high-speed connectors in their systems.
These simulation and Spice and Ibis modeling tools help designers determine how to best implement such Samtec connectors as the QSE, QTE, QSH, QTH and high-density SamArray (up to 500 I/Os) families, for systems requirements including frequency range, data rate transmission and signal integrity. Final Inch will take into account problem areas such as pc board routing, use and size of vias, and board materials, all of which contribute to signal integrity problems, the company said.
Levels of service range from providing models of mated high-speed connectors to the design, modeling and testing of a subsystem, using Samtec's mated connectors, traces through the printed-circuit boards, cabling and other components.
David Givens, business development manager for Samtec's Signal Integrity Division (Harrisburg, Pa.), said customers were requesting help in implementing these high-speed connectors.
In the past, companies evaluated a connector by looking at key specifications such as frequency range, bandwidth capabilities, voltage drop and insertion loss, to see if the connector would work in a particular application, Givens said. "But now it becomes more complicated because the connector is just one part of the transmission line. You can't look at the connector as a standalone item anymore," he said.
As a result, the tools have to be up-graded for evaluation, design and concept, Givens said. "Customers can't just drop these components into their designs. They use modeling techniques. In this way, they can design next-generation products and know if it's going to work with a certain degree of certainty."
Test and evaluation boards will be available as loaners. Initial offerings this month will include test boards for the QSE/QTE connectors. Test boards for the QSH/QTH connectors will be available this month or in August, followed by the SamArray test boards in September. Samtec will hold an online seminar on Final Inch on July 30.
