1.5A LDO + Regulator Monitors Current & Temperature

LDO+ regulators do more than just regulate. They include monitor and control functions as well as regulation. The LT3081 has a wide safe area, allowing operation with high currents at high input/output differentials. Output voltage is adjustable from from 0 to 37 volts, and it withstands reverse voltage. In addition to regulating, it has a current monitor output, providing an analog output current proportional to the output of the regulator. Current limit can be adjusted with a single external resistor. A second monitor current is proportional to the chip temperature. This output can be used to monitor the health of the system and airflow and is useful in debugging.

Unlike any other regulator, the LT3081 output capacitor is optional. Itís stable with no output or input capacitor. The LT3081 can be used in areas where intrinsic safety is important, or it can be used as a current source. Finally, itís adjustable down to zero volts, which means as the logic voltages go lower and lower, this will never be obsolesced.

NEXT UPCOMING BROADCAST
In conjunction with unveiling of EE Timesí Silicon 60 list, journalist & Silicon 60 researcher Peter Clarke hosts a conversation on startups in the electronics industry. One of Silicon Valley's great contributions to the world has been the demonstration of how the application of entrepreneurship and venture capital to electronics and semiconductor hardware can create wealth with developments in semiconductors, displays, design automation, MEMS and across the breadth of hardware developments. But in recent years concerns have been raised that traditional venture capital has turned its back on hardware-related startups in favor of software and Internet applications and services. Panelists from incubators join Peter Clarke in debate.
