electronics, we also create more issues. Most iPhones will be purchased
long before the old phones reach a point of obsolescence, which creates
more waste not only in the old devices (some of which will be recycled
for other consumers), but also in the manufacturing process for the new
devices using up more raw materials and energy while creating some
materials that cannot be recycled or broken down through natural
is, however, good for the electronics industry manufacturing all the
components for the new devices, the companies producing and selling the
devices, the wireless carriers and other service providers supporting
the devices, the software community developing applications for the
devices, and last but not least, the financial community, which is
betting on the profit generated by the devices.
So, even though
the insatiable appetite for these devices may not be good for our
environment and does not fulfill a true need for most consumers, it’s
difficult to say that these devices do not provide some good for our
society. But, I beseech you; please stop queuing outside retail store
days before a product launch. You look foolish and it’s embarrassing to
the rest of us!
