LONDON -- ClearSpeed Technology Ltd., the Bristol, England, based fabless chip company that has based its market offerings on a parallel processing architecture, has demonstrated working silicon of the CS301, a multi-threaded array processor, the company announced Monday (November 17, 2003).
The CS301 was demonstrated executing complex computational algorithms, running at the target clock frequency speed of 200-MHz while consuming less than two watts, the company said.
The move to offering a scientific complexity co-processor is the second major change for the company. It had previously offered the Fuzion-150 to handle network packet processing at OC-768 (40-Gbit/second) data rates (see June 11, 2001, story).
ClearSpeed's foray into the communications market came after a name change from PixelFusion and a repurposing of the original Fuzion 150 design, which combined embedded DRAM with a parallel processing single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) array running at 400-MHz, and was intended to accelerate graphics operations.
The CS301, manufactured for ClearSpeed by IBM in its 130-nanometer manufacturing process technology, includes 64 processing elements, 384-kbytes of on-chip SRAM and I/O ports interconnecting through a proprietary packet-switched on-chip bus called ClearConnect. Each processing element has its own floating point and integer units, local memory and I/O capability.
The CS301 was demonstrated driving a range of applications including drug docking, image processing and more general digital signal processing applications.
"The vision that drives our work is the excitement of knowing what can be achieved by others; of making high compute available to talented individuals and teams across the world," said Tom Beese, chief exeutive officer of ClearSpeed Technology Ltd., in a statement.
The CS301 is to be made available to customers in this quarter priced at $975 in volume. The development kit, including C compiler, graphical debugger, supporting tools, libraries, and a printed circuit board with a CS301 on it, is priced at $25,000, ClearSpeedsaid.
