Mountain View, CA--September 24, 1996--NEC Computer Systems Division (Mountain View, CA) introduced a new, more powerful version of the ProServa SH, its quad-capable, Pentium Pro processor-powered scalable server.
The newest member of the ProServa family, the new ProServa SH utilizes a 200 MHz Pentium Pro Processor with a 512 kbyte Level 2 cache, enabling it to scale to up to four processors.
The ProServa SH is also available with a 200 MHz processor and 256 kbyte Level 2 cache. The ProServa SH will be sold through NEC resellers who can provide a full complement of I/O, disk, storage, network, and memory options.
The ProServa SH base system supports up to two processor cards, and 10 expansion slots for add-in cards. Each card manages one or two 200 MHz processors. Depending on the system's configuration, the ProServa SH can accommodate a 256 kbyte or 512 kbyte cache. Dual peer Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Bridges, dual peer SCSI controllers, and an Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA) bus are integrated on the baseboard as well. The ProServa SH's bus interface handles multiprocessing through dedicated Level 2 cache resource with support for up to a quad-processor system configuration.
The Level 2 cache resource, which is built into the Pentium Pro processor, features four-way set associative architecture, out-of-order processing, speculative execution, non-blocking cache, and a split transaction bus.
Keyboard and idle console password protection, video blanking, floppy write protection, chassis locks, and power/reset switching disabling are a few of the features built into the ProServa SH that help assure efficient operations in a secure environment.
The ProServa SH features support for multiple network environments, seven hot swap drive bays, RAID storage, and redundant power supplies. The server's seven hot swappable bays allow easy integration of hard drives, tape drives, CD-ROMs, and other devices. The two standard 300-watt power supplies can be augmented with an optional third unit for redundancy. Multiple redundant cooling fans help ensure that the server's power and cooling requirements are met at all times.
The multisymmetric capabilities of the ProServa SH enable it to scale easily and seamlessly, without changing applications. Because the ProServa SH can accommodate as many as three additional Pentium Pro processors, it can deliver significant performance improvements over single processor servers.
All ProServa series systems also feature Intel's LANDesk server management software for user control and security. The ProServa SH series also takes advantage of NEC's Enterprise Server Management (ESM), server software that empowers users with the ability to effectively control business-critical servers and network devices in a distributed computing environment.
Like previously announced ProServa systems, the 200 MHz, 512 kbyte cache ProServa SH is certified to run under Microsoft Windows NT and Novell NetWare.
Available through NEC channel partners, the NEC ProServa SH is available today, with estimated pricing beginning at $14,244 for the new 200 MHz system with 512 kbyte cache. NEC also offers the ProServa SH at $11,845 estimated street price for a 200 MHz system with 256 kbyte cache. NEC backs every ProServa SH with NEC's ServerCare, a three-year limited warranty. Service is available through NEC and its Preferred Dealers Program, or through an NEC-authorized third party. A team of technical support professionals is available toll-free 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
