San Jose--Aug. 25, 1997--3Dlabs Inc. (San Jose) announced its support for the AGP VxD (Virtual Device Driver) developed by Intel Corp. (Santa Clara, Calif.), that enables AGP features under Windows 95. 3Dlabs has begun shipments to its board and system OEM customers of development drivers incorporating the AGP VxD and expects to release final Windows 95 AGP drivers to its customers during the 3rd quarter of 1997. This driver update from 3Dlabs will also include full Direct X/Direct 3D 5.0 support.
The Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) interface is a new platform bus specification that enables high-performance graphics capabilities, especially 3D, on PCs at mainstream price points. AGP provides higher bandwidth for graphics processors, which enable them to more efficiently process the additional requirements of 3D graphics which include such features as texture mapping, z-buffering, and alpha blending. The AGP interface adds new features for graphics accelerators, like dedicated pipelined access to main memory and faster transfer rates. This provides a high bandwidth, low latency connection to system memory which can now be used to store 3D graphics data such as texture maps and Z buffers.
PERMEDIA 2 is the second generation in the PERMEDIA family of low-cost graphics processors from 3Dlabs, and is targeted at the commercial desktop, entry-level professional, and power-consumer markets. PERMEDIA 2 is a highly-integrated graphics processor that accelerates 2D and 3D graphics, 3D geometry setup processing, and MPEG-2 video.
PERMEDIA 2 incorporates a full floating-point geometry setup processor, based on proven GLINT Delta technology, a high-performance 230 MHz RAMDAC, and an enhanced graphics engine with unified 2D, 3D, and video acceleration. PERMEDIA 2 is fully-compatible with both PCI and AGP, and exploits advanced AGP features such as sideband addressing to enhance its performance on AGP-based systems.
PERMEDIA 2 is software-compatible with the 3Dlabs GLINT family of professional 3D graphics processors, enabling PERMEDIA 2 to accelerate 3Dlabs' extensive range of fully-optimized 2D and 3D drivers. These drivers include an OpenGL Installable Client Driver and Heidi for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95 and Direct3D for Windows 95. This extensive API set allows PERMEDIA 2-based boards to provide robust acceleration for almost all 3D applications ranging from high-end CAD packages such as SolidWorks, to Direct3D game titles.
