AUSTIN, Texas Lucent Technologies' light, compact non-isolated dc/dc converter modules measure 1.765 x 0.51 x 0.215 inches and weigh less than 5 grams, making them among the smallest and lightest in the industry for the 7-to-16-W power level, according to the company.
The AUSTIN Series is said to be a cost-effective solution for meeting the stringent voltage and transient-response requirements of digital signal processors. They have been designed for wireless infrastructure, Internet telephony server and digital-modem applications. Parts incorporate the advanced topology, high-frequency switching, components, materials and packaging innovations of the company's landmark Titania point-of-load power modules (see July 27, 1998, page 101) in a surface-mount package.
"They are entirely suitable for existing pick-and-place production equipment," said Bill Yeates, vice president and general manager of Lucent's Titania division. "In addition, all output capacitors, usually the designer's biggest concern, are on board and the user need only add an input filter to meet specs. These units also have a common footprint for instant upgrading as advanced DSPs arrive." Mean time between failures is 5 million hours, Yeates said, "to match the silicon devices they power."
The modules' low-inductance surface-mount (user) connector conserves the converter's inherently high transient response (operational slew rate is 400 A/microsecond) to handle the requirements of present and future DSPs. Other features include an output-enable/output-volt-age adjustment pin, overcurrent foldback protection and plus/minus 5 percent trimming with a single resistor. Modules meet UL 1950, CAS 22.2. No. 950-95 and VDE 0805 (EN60950, IEC950) specifications, as well as 73/23/ EEC and 93/68/EEC directives for integration into end-use equipment.
Modules come in nine versions, providing 1.5, 1.8, 2 and 2.5 V from a 3-to-3.6-V input, with the same voltage outputs and a 3.3-V output as well from the 4.5-to-5.5-V input models. Maximum output current for all devices is 5 A. Efficiency is typically 71 to 85 percent, depending on the model. All devices are supplied with application notes.
