WEST KINGSTON, R.I. The Masterswitch Plus from APC is a server-based remote power control unit (PCU) that allows users to individually control power to connected devices, and gracefully shut down up to eight connected servers of different operating systems based on UPS events or the company's environmental monitoring card (previously called Measure-UPS II) events.
The unit provides on-demand operations that include power-on, delayed power-on, power-off, reboot, graceful OS shutdown and graceful reboot (OS shutdown of connected servers, brief delay, then reboot). Additionally, MasterSwitch Plus is a multiport interface expander that allows up to eight servers to monitor the condition and status of a single APC UPS (Smart-UPS, Matrix or Symmetra).
Servers connected to the eight basic ports receive status information using the server's built-in UPS monitoring or the APC PowerChute Plus software. A server connected to the advanced port can use that software to take full advantage of the extended capabilities of the UPS, the company said.
Each power outlet of the MasterSwitch Plus is independently configurable. Users can establish automatic OS shutdown and power (load) shedding in a predetermined sequence by configuring each outlet in graceful shutdown mode. When MasterSwitch Plus detects an on battery signal from the connected UPS (or an APC environmental monitoring card alarm), it shuts down the OS and turns off less essential servers in order to extend UPS run-time. Users can set up each outlet to restart the server automatically once the power has been restored. The device also uses the APC Web/Simple Network Management Protocol management card to control attached devices (servers, hubs, routers, etc.). The unit comes equipped with an integrated SmartSlot bay to support various network environments.
Users also have the ability to order MasterSwitch Plus expansion units (AP9225EXP), which will allow for the simultaneous use of up to four expansion units, including the use of the environmental monitoring card, over a 10-Mbit/ second Ethernet network using a standard Web browser or Telnet session. Moreover, MasterSwitch Plus provides administrators with the ability to set any outlet to annunciator mode. An outlet thus configured toggles the power to a connected peripheral, such as a fan or warning alarm, when an environmental monitoring card alarm is asserted. The outlet's power is toggled again when the alarm is cleared.
List price for the MasterSwitch Plus is $999.
