Dallas, TX.Texas Instruments Incorporated announced the GC1115 crest factor reduction (CFR) processor designed to significantly increase the efficiency of basestation power amplifiers (PAs). The GC1115 CFR chip limits signal peaks, driving down the peak-to-average ratio (PAR) of multi-user, multi-carrier third-generation (3G) signals, allowing cellular base station manufacturers to purchase less expensive PAs.
TI's new CFR processor is specified with output PARs of less than 6 dB. With this device, in-band peak code domain error (PCDE) and composite error vector magnitude (cEVM) metrics are kept well within 3GPP UMTS standards for signal bandwidths up to 20 MHz. Similarly, in-band quality metrics are within 3GPP2 standards at 6 dB PAR for CDMA signals. The device can be programmed for a variety of carrier configurations. It receives its input from a digital up-converter, processes the data based on user-programmed settings via a 16-bit control port, and provides its output to a digital-to-analog converter (DAC).
Input sampling rates to 130 Msamples/sec are supported, in either parallel or multiplexed I/Q modes, and in either twos complement or unsigned format. Output sampling rates to 130 Msamples/sec are supported in either parallel or multiplexed I/Q modes, and in either twos complement or unsigned format. A special one-channel output mode uses both GC1115 output ports to carry odd/even real output samples. The GC1115 includes an interpolator that increases the output sampling rate by 2x or 4x and optionally modulates the output signal to the fs/4 center frequency. Dual on-chip RAM banks provide either time-domain snapshots or long-term histogramming of the internal peak cancellation signal chain at five user-selected points.
A GC1115 CFR evaluation module (EVM) daughter card is available to developers for use with the company's GC101EVM evaluation system. Software is included that provides configuration examples and demonstrates how to initialize and to operate the device for a variety of single and multi-carrier 3G configurations.
The GC1115 is priced at $35.00 each in 1,000-piece quantities. It is available now. Click here for the GC1115 data sheet.
