VITESSE EXTENDS LEADERSHIP IN GIGABIT ETHERNET WITH FIRST 600mW GIGABIT ETHERNET PHY
Industry’s Lowest Power, Most Integrated Gigabit Ethernet PHY Brings Cost and Complexity Down to Accelerate Market Transition to GbE
CAMARILLO, CAVitesse Semiconductor Corp. announced the 600mW SimpliPHY VSC8601 and VSC8641, the industry’s lowest power and most integrated Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) PHYs. Vitesse is the first to achieve 600mW in a highly integrated GbE PHY, extending its technology leadership while helping customers bring system cost down and system performance up. Leveraging power, performance and integration, the VSC8601 and VSC8641 enable customers to accelerate the transition to GbE to support today’s bandwidth-intensive applications driven by converged data, voice and video traffic.

Adoption of Gigabit Ethernet has been driven by customer requirements and technology capabilities, largely fueled by the so-called Triple Play and the increasing bandwidth requirements associated with converged data, voice and video applications. With the VSC8601 and VSC8641 Vitesse reduces system cost and complexity, removing key barriers for companies and supporting the transition to GbE. These newest additions to the SimpliPHY family represent Vitesse’s sixth generation GbE PHY and mark the next stage in continuing advancement and integration.
Power is a critical consideration in PC board design. By lowering power consumption, Vitesse is reducing costs and enabling greater integration and performance at both the device and system levels. With more capabilities integrated into its SimpliPHY devices, Vitesse offers a higher level of assurance to its customers, improving reliability and performance while reducing circuit and system risk. The highly integrated VSC8601 and VSC8641 feature line side termination resistors to simplify PCB design, maximize board space, and create a cleaner, higher performance product. To further reduce complexity, component count, and system cost, the VSC8601 and VSC8641 include an internal 1.2V power regulator that operates on a single 3.3V supply. Additionally, integrated RGMII timing compensation on the VSC8601 eliminates the need for on-board delay lines. Vitesse customers also benefit from fewer components on the board, reducing failure rate at the manufacturing level, lowering Build of Materials expenses, and delivering a cleaner, more productive product to their users.
