Sunnyvale, Calif.Catalyst Semiconductor Inc. has launched a family of I/O bus expanders with two 8bit devicesthe CAT9554 and CAT9554Athat are designed to provide a simple and cost-effective method of addressing eight I²C or SMBus I/O ports.
The CAT9554 and CAT9554A 8-bit I²C/SMBus devices help designers balance system performance, processor, and board costs for sensor, control, and LED applications in white goods, digital cameras, cell phones, PDAs, routers, hubs and servers.
They are offered as a second source to Philips' PCA9554/PCA9554A bus expanders.
The CAT9554 and CAT9554A consist of eight ports, which power up as inputs and can be configured as an input or output by writing to a register. An internal power-on reset in both devices eliminates glitches on power-up.
Each I/O port is 5-V input tolerant, with a high current I/O drive sink of up to 25-mA and an I/O source of up to 10-mA, maximum. Additionally, each I/O port is compatible with logic thresholds of 2.5-V, 3.3-V and 5-V.
The CAT9554 and CAT9554A have different fixed slave addresses to avoid conflict issues and double the potential I/O capabilities.
The CAT9554 and CAT9554A are available in three RoHS-compliant package options: 16-pin SOIC, 16-pin TSSOP, and 16-pad 4x4 TQFN. Pricing for 10,000 piece quantities is $0.50 each.
