A couple of months ago, Xilinx announced two "industry firsts" at 20-nm, with the tape-out of the semiconductor industry’s first 20-nm device and the PLD industry’s first 20-nm All Programmable device. (See: First 20nm UtraScale ASIC-Class FPGA From Xilinx.)
Well, taping out a prototype device is one thing, but progressing to actual customer shipments is quite another kettle of fish. So I was very pleasantly surprised to hear the news that Xilinx has made its first customer shipment of a 20-nm UltraScale device, which is implemented in TSMC's 20-nm process technology.
